In the design of interactive water park equipment, achieving a proper balance between interactive fun and safety is a challenge. The interactive water seesaw, one of the representative interactive products, will be analyzed in details in this document. The analysis will be conducted from four aspects: equipment definition and design, core material, principle of functional dynamics and safety standard. 1. Definition.
Water seesaw is a kind of kinetic splash pad equipment specially designed for children. Its design concept is to combine the traditional mechanics of a seesaw with the kinetic effect of water spraying. The specification of the unit described below is 300 cm long, 40 cm wide and 90 cm high-which is applicable to most shallow children’s children’s pools. The whole water play is centered around the central column. The long beam with seats for ergonomically children at both ends is suspended from the top. It’s not simply a seesaw transferred from land to water; it’s a combined water playground, which integrates kinetic motion, collaboration and water-spraying. 2. Material.
The scientific use of composite materials is the key to the structural strength and safety of this water seesaw, which is galvanized steel pipe as the main load-bearing structure and the fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) as the component contacting with children. The main frame of the water teeter-totter is composed of galvanized steel pipe. It is supported at both ends by the fulcrum formed by the central column. The mechanical strength of the steel pipe is remarkable and can provide sufficient rigid support to the long beam. The length of the beam between two children’s seats is 300cm, which can be driven by two children through their pedaling and weight in a rhythmic and oscillating way.
The galvanizing process is carried out by dipping the steel pipe into a molten bath of zinc at about 860°C. The surface of the pipe is covered with a dense layer of zinc, which provides it with good anti-corrosion performance. Anti-corrosion performance is very important for extending the service life of the water seesaw, especially in the presence of water and disinfectants.
For the parts contacting with children such as seats, handles and decorative shells, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) is the first choice. This is because FRP can be molded into smooth curved shapes without sharp edges, greatly reducing the risk of impact injuries to children. At the same time, FRP is light and strong, non-absorbable and non-aging, which makes the seats, handles and decorative shells look fresh and clean after repeated use. In short, steel is used to ensure the structural strength of the Water Teeter-Totter, and fiber reinforced plastic is used to ensure the safety of contact with children. 3.Function.
The interactive experience of this water teeter-totter is based on the mechanics and fluid dynamics. The main game mode of this equipment is classic lever motion. Two children communicate with each other through pedaling and their body weight to drive the 300cm long beam to oscillate in a rhythmic motion.
The ingenuity of this design is in the direct correlation between this mechanical movement and the water-spray function. When one end is pressed into the water by gravity, the internal self-priming pump mechanism is activated by the pressure differential and draws pool water in. Then, when that end is lifted out of the water by the weight of the partner, the accumulated water is forced out through pre-set nozzle(s) or controlled water-gun structure. This equipment does not require electrical power and is mechanically converting energy. The child can directly control the number and distance of the times the water is squirted by controlling the frequency and amplitude of the movement of the seesaw, that is, a simple physical movement easily turned into a game of water war.
4. Safety.
Being a children's playground equipment, this product's safety design includes a dual-layer of protection. First and foremost, this is a structure safety design. The water seesaw is securely fastened to the floor of the pool by a flange plate or embedded parts, eliminating any possibility of tipping or toppling. The total height of the equipment is 90cm, and this is the result of careful calculation for the convenience of children to sit on and access the teeter-totter, as well as the water level of shallow play pools.
On the level of user safety, all surface areas where children might grab to grip or step on are coated with an anti-slip layer to withstand wet surfaces. The water pressure of the water spray system is strictly controlled, and the jet water stream does not irritate children's eyes or skin.
From a mechanical-lever motion perspective, we still recommend that this equipment be used for children aged five years old and above, and children must use it under the supervision of an adult. If one child on a horse loses his balance and dismounts, he or she must be supported by the adult in case he or she loses his or her balance and falls from the horse as well.
Overall, this splash park equipment's safety consideration is present throughout the design, manufacture and installation process.
