This custom non-standard
rocket space station themed playground was designed and built for a premium private kindergarten in southwest China, serving as the centerpiece of its outdoor sand play exploration zone. Built on a narrow sand-filled site, the structure adopts a vertical multi-level layout, with a rocket launch tower as the narrative core, connected by space tunnel corridors, spiral transparent tube slides, rope climbing nets and interactive play platforms.
The entire system integrates physical exercise, spatial exploration, role-play and STEAM science education. It features a hot-dip galvanized steel frame, food-grade PE decorative panels and transparent PC slide sections, paired with a sand-specific anti-settlement foundation. The playground works seamlessly with the kindergarten’s traffic play zone and nature planting area, creating an immersive outdoor space exploration classroom for young learners.

2.Client Requirements & Site Challenges
The kindergarten follows an inquiry-based STEAM education philosophy and planned to upgrade its narrow west sand area into a space-themed outdoor exploration classroom. The project faced four key challenges:
- Limited and narrow site shape: The available sand zone was long and narrow, located between the teaching building and the traffic play path. There was no room for a large flat playground, so the design had to expand vertically without blocking building daylight.
- Soft sand foundation risks: Loose sand ground can easily cause settlement and tilting for ordinary play equipment. Fine sand from daily sand play also easily enters slide gaps and platform corners, increasing cleaning and maintenance work.
- Educational function integration: The playground was not meant to be purely recreational. It needed to match the kindergarten's space science curriculum and support role-play, cognitive learning and physical exercise all in one structure.
- All-age inclusive design: The equipment had to serve children from 3 to 6 years old. Younger toddlers needed low-height, gentle crawling zones, while older children required challenging elevated slides and climbing features.
3. Our Custom Rocket Playground Solution
Combining the site shape and educational positioning, we delivered a “one core, two wings, vertical layers” play solution. The rocket main tower sits at the center, with horizontal tunnel corridors extending sideways, and slides and climbing facilities of different difficulty on both sides, maximizing play value within the limited sand area.
3-Level Rocket Main Tower
The core structure is a three-story vertical rocket launch tower with a realistic return capsule top, portholes, radar and other space-themed details. Each platform level serves a different age group:
- Ground level: Open crawling space and interactive science panels for younger toddlers, supporting role-play without climbing.
- Middle level: Connected to the horizontal tunnel and gentle slide, serving as a transfer and rest platform for all ages.
- Top level: Elevated viewing platform and spiral slide entrance, designed for senior class children to gain a sense of achievement through climbing and exploration.
The tower body is built on a hot-dip galvanized steel frame with one-piece rotomolded PE outer panels. All edges are fully rounded with no sharp corners for safe child contact.
Horizontal Space Tunnel Corridor
Cylindrical space cabin channels run horizontally, connecting the rocket main tower to side platforms and simulating space station module docking. Part of the tunnel uses transparent PC material, so children can observe the outside while crawling, enhancing spatial awareness and exploration fun. The tunnel inner diameter is ergonomically calculated to allow smooth passage while preventing head-on running collisions.
Tiered Slide System for All Ages
Two types of slides with different difficulty levels are configured to cover all age groups:
- Spiral transparent tube slide: Starts from the top rocket platform, with transparent PC viewing sections along the route. It delivers both speed and exploration fun, designed for older kindergarten children.
- Gentle short slide: Extends from the middle platform, with a mild slope and short travel distance, with its exit facing the sand pit. It is suitable for younger children to use independently.
All slide entrances are designed with sand-blocking steps, and exits are raised above the sand surface to prevent fine sand from entering the slide track, reducing wear and slipping risks.
Rope Climbing & Physical Expansion Zone
Diagonal climbing nets and step climbing poles are arranged on both sides of the structure to exercise children's limb strength and balance. The climbing nets are made of thickened nylon material with mesh sizes strictly meeting anti-head-entrapment safety standards, with soft edging all around. All climbing components are sand-sealed to avoid fine sand accumulation and part wear.
Sand-Specific Anti-Settlement Foundation
For soft sandy ground, we adopted a deep embedded + concrete bearing platform foundation solution. Anti-settlement trays are added at the bottom of the columns to disperse pressure and prevent tilting after long-term use. All platforms are raised more than 15cm above the sand surface, with sand-blocking rubber strips installed at gaps to minimize sand buildup and daily cleaning workload.

Different from traditional flat playgrounds, the vertical layered design delivers three levels of play space on a narrow sand site. It does not occupy ground sand play area, and perfectly fits the long-strip shape of the kindergarten's sand zone.
Sand-Adapted Structure Reduces Long-Term Maintenance
The raised platform design, sand-blocking strips and sealed connecting parts greatly reduce sand intrusion into internal gaps. The smooth PE and PC surfaces can be rinsed directly with water, which is very friendly for sand & water play zones with high cleaning frequency.
STEAM-Embedded Educational Play Value
The complete space exploration narrative supports the kindergarten's themed science courses. Teachers can carry out space knowledge popularization, role-playing games and physical training on site, turning outdoor play into a movable STEAM classroom.
All-Age Inclusive Layout
With clear difficulty gradients, one set of equipment meets the play needs of the entire kindergarten. Younger children can crawl and play on the ground and middle levels, while older children can challenge high slides and climbing nets, improving the utilization rate of the kindergarten’s outdoor facilities.
Heavy-Duty Durability for Year-Round Outdoor Use
The full hot-dip galvanized steel frame resists rust in humid and rainy climates, and the UV-stabilized PE panels maintain color stability under long-term sun exposure. It is built to last for more than 10 years of stable outdoor operation.
